Attorney John Biernat passed the State Bar of Michigan a short time after graduating from University of Detroit’s Mercy School of Law. He currently practices with Padilla Law Group in where he works on personal injury cases and auto negligence. As a part of his undergraduate degree, John Biernat attended Hillsdale College where he became a member of the fraternity Sigma Chi.

More than being a social organization, Sigma Chi also enables the continued growth of the association’s projects. According to the fraternity website, it supports more member activities than any other fraternal organization. One of the ways members and alumni can contribute to the future of the fraternity is through legacy giving.

Sigma Chi members make their legacy contributions to a separate fundraising initiative, the Sigma Chi Foundation. The foundation collects and manages donations toward the fraternity’s scholarship and leadership endeavors, as well as the specific goals that donors have for their bequests. In the case of legacy giving, this involves naming Sigma Chi Foundation in a will or trust. A contributor can also name the foundation as a beneficiary in retirement plans, commercial annuities, life insurance policies, and other financial documents. Contributions of property (home, second home, or farm) can be a part of legacy giving as well. A legacy gift ensures the individual and their family’s connection to Sigma Chi and its resources, and an enduring endowment to a cause they care about, be it supporting future academics, expanding fraternity chapters, or aiding charities.
